한국 드라마가 OTT 플랫폼, 특히 넷플릭스를 통해 글로벌 시장에서 빠르게 확산되며 다양한 국가의 시청자들에게 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 그 러나 드라마는 제작 국가의 언어와 문화적 요소에 대한 의존도가 높아 해외 시장에서 문화적 할인 현상이 나타날 가능성이 크다. 이에 본 연구 는 넷플릭스 플랫폼을 통해 유통되는 한국 드라마를 대상으로, 국가별 문화적 거리와 장르에 따른 수용성의 차이를 실증 분석하였다. 이를 위 해 2022년부터 2024년까지 71개국에서 넷플릭스를 통해 방영된 한국 드 라마의 TOP 10 진입 일수를 활용하여 다중회귀분석 및 상호작용효과분 석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 문화적 거리가 증가할 때 한국 드라마의 글 로벌 수용도는 유의미하게 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 장르와 지리 적 거리 간 상호작용 효과 분석 결과, 범죄, 호러, 스릴러 장르에서 지리 적 거리의 부정적 영향이 통계적으로 유의하게 완화되는 양상이 확인되 었다. 이러한 결과는 한국 드라마의 해외 유통 전략 수립에 있어 단순한 콘텐츠 수출 중심의 일률적 접근을 넘어서, 국가별 문화적 거리와 장르 별 수용 특성을 정교하게 반영한 차별화된 현지화 전략의 필요성을 강하 게 시사한다. 이는 한국 드라마가 문화적 장벽을 효과적으로 완화하고, 다양한 문화권에서의 수용성을 극대화하며, 궁극적으로는 K-콘텐츠 산업 의 지속 가능한 성장과 글로벌 경쟁력 제고를 도모하기 위한 핵심 전략 으로 작용할 수 있다.

Korean dramas have rapidly expanded their presence in the global market through OTT platforms, particularly Netflix, garnering widespread popularity among international audiences. However, due to their strong dependence on the language and cultural elements of the production country, these dramas are susceptible to cultural discount effects in foreign markets. This study empirically investigates the variation in the reception of Korean dramas across countries, focusing on cultural distance and genre as key explanatory factors. Using panel data from 71 countries between 2022 and 2024, we analyze the number of days Korean dramas appeared in Netflix’s Top 10 rankings through multiple regression and interaction effect models. The results reveal a significant negative relationship between cultural distance and global reception, indicating that greater cultural distance reduces audience acceptance. Furthermore, interaction analyses between genre and geographic distance show that the negative impact of geographic distance is statistically mitigated for genres such as crime, horror, and thriller. Such strategies may serve as a critical pathway for mitigating cultural barriers, enhancing cross-cultural reception, and ultimately advancing the sustainable growth and global competitiveness of the K-content industry.
