올해 2025년에 한국선교 역사 140주년을 기념하는 행사들이 많이 진행되었다. 하지만 올해를 140주년으로 기념하는 일에 대한 명확한 근거 없이 단순히 1885년 4월 5일 인천 제물포에 도착한 감리회 아펜젤러 선교사와 장로회 언더우드 선교사를 기점으로 기념행사를 진행하는 경우가 많았다. 본 논문은 한국개신교 역사 가운데 1909년에 가장 먼저 25주년을 기념했던 미국 북장로회를 시작으로, 1934년에 각각 50주년을 기념한 미국 북감리회와 미국 북장로회의 역사 기념의 과정과 의미 등을 살펴본다. 아울러 1984년부터 시작된 100주년 기념의 의미와 구체적인 내용을 되짚어 본다. 아울러 50주년 기념과 100주년 기념의 공통점과 차이점을 밝히고 있다. 이를 통해 올해 2025년에 이루어진 한국개신교 역사 기념의 의미를 교파별, 또는 교파 연합적 의미를 탐구할 뿐만 아니라 한국개신교 150주년이 되는 2034년에는 한국개신교 전체가 역사와 전통을 아름답게 부각하는 일을 제안하고 있다.

In 2025, many events have marked the 140th anniversary of Protestant missions in Korea, often based simply on the 1885 arrival of of Methodist missionary Henry Appenzeller and Presbyterian missionary Horace Underwood at Jemulpo, Incheon on April 5, 1885, without a clear and substantiated basis for designating this year as the 140th anniversary. This paper reviews earlier commemorations-such as the Presbyterian Church’s 25th anniversary in 1909, and the 50th anniversaries in 1934 by Methodist and Presbyterian churches-as well as the centennial events from 1984. It compares the 50th and 100th anniversaries to assess their significance. The study also reflects on the meaning of the 2025 commemorations and proposes a unified effort by Korean Protestantism to meaningfully celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2034.
