본 연구는 시선추적 기술을 활용하여 한국 전통정원에 대한 세대별 시각적 지각과 인식 차이를 규명하 는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 청년층과 노년층을 대상으로 시선추적 기술과 설문조사를 병행하 였다. 설문결과 두 세대 모두 전통정원을 신비롭고 조화로운 공간으로 인식하며, 높은 선호도를 나타냈 다. 하지만 노년층은 전통정원을 과거를 떠올리게 하는 공간으로 인식한 반면 청년층은 다양한 요소를 탐구할 수 있는 흥미로운 공간으로 평가하였다. 또한 다양성과 가독성에 대한 인식에서도 세대 간 차이 가 있었는데 노년층은 전통정원을 친숙한 공간으로 인식하며, 그 구성요소를 쉽게 인지할 수 있는 경관 으로 평가하였다. 선호도를 종속변수로 선호 특성과 인식을 독립변수로 하여 회귀분석을 실시한 결과 노년층의 경우 친숙함과 신비감이 전통경관 선호도에 양의 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 시선추 적 결과 노년층은 건축적 요소에 시선을 가장 오래 고정하며, 과거 경험과 향수와의 연결성을 보인 반면 청년층은 수경 요소 및 점경물에 상대적으로 더 많은 관심을 보였다. 본 연구는 전통정원이 세대별로 다르게 인식되고 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였으며, 이러한 차이는 전통정원의 현대적 설계 및 보존 방안 마련에 중요한 자료로 활용될 수 있다.

This study aimed to identify generational differences in visual attention and perception of traditional Korean gardens using eye-tracking technology. To achieve this, eye-tracking and survey methods were applied to analyze the visual attention and perception of traditional gardens among younger adults and older adults. Survey results showed that both generations perceived traditional gardens as mysterious and harmonious spaces, expressing a high preference. However, older adults perceived traditional gardens as spaces that evoke past memories, whereas younger adults viewed them as interesting spaces to explore with diverse elements. Differences were also found in the perception of complexity and legibility; older adults perceived traditional gardens as familiar environments where the spatial structure was easy to understand and navigate. Regression analysis was conducted with preference as the dependent variable and preference characteristics and perception as independent variables. The results showed that, for older adults, familiarity and mystery had a positive impact on preference for traditional landscapes. According to eye-tracking results, older adults tended to fixate longer on traditional architectural elements, reflecting their connection to past experiences and nostalgia, while younger adults showed relatively more interest in water features and garden features. This study confirms that traditional gardens are perceived and utilized differently depending on the generation, and these differences provide important insights for the modern design and conservation of traditional gardens.
