본 논문은 신앙적 여정 속에서 고통을 문학으로 승화시킨 존 던, 조지 허버 트, 존 번연의 문학 작품을 분석한다. 이를 위해, 세 작가의 신학적 관점에 근거 하여 􋺷성시􋺸, 􋺷성전􋺸, 􋺷천로역정􋺸을 비교하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 던 은 가톨릭파-국교도로서, 작중 항변자로 묘사된다. 그에게 고통은 시련의 과정 이며, 구원의 불확실성 속에서 자비를 구하며 고통을 극복한다. 둘째, 허버트는 칼뱅주의-국교도로서, 작중 순종자로 묘사된다. 그에게 고통은 믿음을 정련하는 과정이며, 순종으로 고통을 극복한다. 셋째, 번연은 알미니안-청교도로서, 작중 순례자로 묘사된다. 그에게 고통은 믿음을 단련하는 과정이며, 결단과 노력으로 고통을 극복한다. 이처럼 각기 다른 신학적 맥락을 가진 세 작가는 고통에 대한 성찰을 각각 불안정한 소네트, 정형적 패턴시, 서사적 우화라는 문학 형식을 빌 려 효과적으로 드러내며 문학적으로 응답한다.

Abstract: This paper analyzes how John Donne, George Herbert, and John Bunyan transform suffering into literature through their journeys of faith, comparing Holy Sonnets, The Temple, and The Pilgrim’s Progress in light of their theological perspectives. The findings are as follows. First, Donne, a Church of England priest with a Catholic background, is portrayed in his works as an apologist, where suffering constitutes a trial through which he petitions for divine mercy amidst the uncertainty of salvation. Secondly, Herbert, a Church of England priest with Calvinist theology, is depicted as a devotee, whose suffering functions as a process that refines faith, which he experiences through obedience. Thirdly, Bunyan, a Puritan with Wesleyan-Arminian beliefs, is represented as a pilgrim, whose suffering serves to strengthen faith, which he undertakes through deliberate effort and decision-making. In each case, the authors’ theological frameworks shape their responses to suffering, expressed in sonnets, patterned poems, and allegorical narratives.
