본 연구는 최성각의 중편소설 약사여래는 오지 않는다 를 중심으로 불교적 상징이 생태적 위기 속에서 문학적으로 어떻게 변용되고 기능하는지를 분석하 였다. 기존 연구가 주로 환경오염과 타자성 회복을 중심으로 이 작품을 조명해 왔다면, 본 연구는 ‘약사여래’라는 불교적 상징 부재와 지연이 문학적 사유의 공간을 어떻게 열어주는지를 집중적으로 고찰하였다. 작품은 고통과 구원의 문 제를 전통적인 종교 서사로부터 이탈시키며, 불교적 사유를 교리적 재현이 아닌 문학적 질문과 성찰의 장으로 전유한다. 이를 통해 문학은 종교와 생태 윤리를 넘나들며 고통 이후의 삶을 사유하게 만드는 수행적 공간으로 기능한다. 특히 약사여래라는 상징이 단지 구원의 부재를 선언하는 것이 아니라 그 부재를 통 해 독자가 스스로 고통의 의미와 존재의 조건을 성찰하게 만든다는 점을 확인 할 수 있었다. 본 논문은 불교, 생태, 문학이라는 세 사유 영역의 접점에서 문학 이 어떻게 구원의 문제를 재사유 하는지를 탐색하였으며, 이를 통해 불교적 세 계관과 문학적 상상력이 만날 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 모색했다는 점에서 의 의가 있다.

This study analyzed how Buddhist symbols were transformed and functioned literarily amid ecological crises, focusing on Choi Sung-gak’s mid-length novel The Medicine Buddha Does Not Come. It examined how the absence and deferral of the Buddhist symbol of the “Medicine Buddha” (Yaksa Yeorae) opened a space for literary reflection and philosophical inquiry. The work detached the problem of suffering and salvation from traditional religious narratives, revealing that the symbol of the Medicine Buddha did not merely declare the absence of salvation but invited readers to reflect on the meaning of suffering and the conditions of existence. Situated at the intersection of Buddhism, ecology, and literature, this study explored how literature could re-conceptualize the problem of salvation and opened new possibilities for the encounter between the Buddhist worldview and literary imagination.
