울산지역의 청동기시대 취락 연구는 취락과 주거의 시간적, 공간적 단위의 모호함으로 인해 체계적 이고 정량적인 취락체계 연구에 어려움이 있었다. 이에 방사성탄소연대와 고고자료를 토대로 시기별 분 기를 재설정하고, 점유표면분석을 통해 단위공동체의 범위를 정량적이고 일관된 기준으로 추출하였다. 또한 순위-규모 분석을 통해 지역공동체의 통합도와 규모상 분화를 검토하였다. 분석 결과 중기에는 전기에 비해 취락 수와 규모가 증가하는 양상이 확인되었다. 또한 전기에서 중 기로의 이행에서 지역공동체 내 단위공동체의 규모상 분화가 심화되는 양상으로 전기보다 중기에 안 정적인 통합도를 보이고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 전기와 중기 모두에서 광역적 수준에서의 정치 체 형성을 보여주는 규모상 분화는 나타나지 않았고, 기존 연구에서 중심취락으로 주장되던 환호취락 또한 내부 단위공동체 간 규모상의 뚜렷한 분화를 보이지 않거나 취락체계 내에서 중심적인 역할을 수행 하였다고 보기 어렵다. 따라서 특정 시설만으로 중심취락의 경계를 설정하거나 취락의 위계를 논의하는 것은 신중한 접근이 필요함을 시사한다.

Studies on Bronze Age settlements in the Ulsan region have encountered difficulties in conducting systematic and quantitative analyses of settlement systems, largely due to ambiguities in the temporal and spatial units of settlements and dwellings. To address this, radiocarbon dates and archaeological data were used to redefine chronological phases, and the extent of local communities was quantitatively extracted based on consistent criteria through occupational surface analysis. In addition, rank-size analysis was applied to examine the degree of integration and scale-based differentiation among regional communities. The analysis indicates that the number and size of settlements increased during the Middle Bronze Age compared to the Early Bronze Age. It also appears that the transition from the early to the middle phase was accompanied by more pronounced scale-based differentiation among local communities, suggesting a relatively higher degree of integration in the middle phase. However, neither the Early nor Middle Bronze Age exhibits scale-based differentiation indicative of polity formation at a broader regional level. Moreover, the so-called ditch-enclosed settlements, previously interpreted as central settlements, do not demonstrate clear internal differentiation among constituent local communities nor appear to have played a central role within the settlement system. These findings suggest that the designation of central settlements or hierarchical structures based solely on specific facilities warrants a more cautious and critical approach.
