본 연구는 뮤지컬 『캣츠』의 미스터 미스토펠리스 장면을 대상으로 라반 움직임 분석(LMA)의 BESS 체계(Body, Effort, Shape, Space)를 적용해 배우의 신체가 무대의 리듬, 정서, 공간 질서를 어떻게 구성하는지 분석하였다. 국내 공연 연구에서 BESS의 통합적 적용 사례가 드물고, 해당 장 면이 신체, 조명, 음악, 소품이 결합한 대표적 복합 움직임이라는 점에서 연구 필요성이 제기되었 다. 연구는 문헌 검토, 주요 시퀀스 추출, BESS 요소별 기록과 종합 해석의 단계로 진행되었다. 분석 결과, ‘중심 이동, 에너지 조절, 형태 확장, 공간 재조직’의 순환 구조 속에서 무대 정서 를 형성했다. 등장, 번개 마술에서는 복부 중심의 안정, 빨라지는 시간과 통제되는 흐름, 팔의 수직 확장이 긴장과 리듬을 이끌었다. 리본 통 마술에서는 느려지는 시간과 자유로운 흐름, 곡선 적 모양이 내적 에너지의 확산과 공간의 유연성을 시각화했다. 댄스 브레이크에서는 노력 충동을 통해 BESS의 완전한 통합이 강렬한 무대 에너지를 생성했다. 천 마술에서는 통합 모양, 원형 파동 이 공간 질서를 재편하며 정서를 확장했다. 엔딩에서는 중심 하강과 수평적 이완을 통해 관계적 균형을 회복했다. 이를 통해 배우의 신체가 감정, 공간을 창조하는 주체임을 확인했으나, 영상 기반 단일 캐릭터 분석이라는 한계를 지닌다. 본 연구는 LMA BESS의 뮤지컬 움직임 분석 적용 가 능성을 제시하는 국내 선행 사례로 의의를 갖는다.

This study analyzes the Mr. Mistoffelees sequence from the musical Cats by applying the BESS framework (Body, Effort, Shape, Space) of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) to examine how the performer’s body constructs rhythm, emotion, and spatial order onstage. The need for this research arises from the rarity of integrated BESS applications in Korean performance studies and the scene’s complex interplay of body, lighting, music, and props. The methodology included literature review, sequence extraction from performance footage, BESS-based movement notation, and integrated interpretation. Findings indicate that the performer’s movement creates stage affect through a cyclic structure of center shift, energy regulation, shape expansion, and spatial reorganization. In the entrance and lightning magic, core stability, Quick Time, Bound Flow, and vertical arm extensions heightened tension and rhythm. The ribbon-tube magic showed Sustained Time, Free Flow, and curved shapes visualizing internal energy spread. The dance break featured intensified Effort Drives, achieving full BESS integration and strong stage energy. In the cloth magic, integrated shaping and circular waves reorganized spatial order and expanded emotion. The ending restored relational balance through center lowering and horizontal release. While limited by video-based, single-character analysis, the study offers an early Korean example demonstrating the applicability of LMA BESS to musical performance analysis.
