본 연구는 미국 포스트모던 댄스의 대표 안무가 머스 커닝햄(Merce Cunningham)의 작품을 중심으로 포스트모던 댄스의 미학적 특성을 탐 구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 포스트모던 댄스는 1960년대 사회·문화적 변화와 포스트모더니즘 사상의 영향을 받아 전통적 무용 미학을 해체하 고 새로운 창작 방식을 제시하였다. 커닝햄은 '무용은 곧 움직임'이라는 이념을 바탕으로 우연성 기법, 순수한 움직임, 타 예술과의 융합을 강조 하였으며, 본 연구는 그의 주요 작품인 <레인포레스트 (RainForest)>, <포인트 인 스페이스 (Points in Space)>, <바이패드 (BIPED)>을 분석 하여 우연성과 즉흥성, 탈서사성과 움직임의 독립성, 그리고 융합성과 확 장성이라는 미학적 특성을 도출하였다. 결론적으로 커닝햄의 안무는 현 대무용에서 즉흥성, 탈서사성, 융합성을 중심으로 한 포스트모던 미학을 구현했으며 이는 오늘날 무용 예술의 창작과 발전에도 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 특히 포스트모던 무용 미학 연구는 무용의 본질과 표현 가능 성을 새롭게 조명한다는 의의가 있으며, 커닝햄 작품 분석은 현대무용이 지닌 창작적 자유와 예술적 확장성을 이해하는 데 중요한 기반을 제공한 다.

This study aims to explore the aesthetic characteristics of American postmodern dance by focusing on the works of Merce Cunningham, one of its representative choreographers. Postmodern dance, influenced by the social and cultural changes of the 1960s and the rise of postmodernist thought, dismantled traditional dance aesthetics and proposed new methods of creation. Based on the principle that “dance is movement,” Cunningham emphasized chance procedures, pure movement, and the fusion of dance with other art forms. By analyzing his major works RainForest, Points in Space, and BIPED, this study identifies the aesthetic features of chance and improvisation, non-narrativity and independence of movement, as well as hybridity and expansion. In conclusion, Cunningham’s choreography embodied postmodern aesthetics centered on improvisation, non-narrativity, and interdisciplinarity, providing significant implications for the creation and development of contemporary dance. In particular, the study of postmodern dance aesthetics sheds new light on the essence and expressive possibilities of dance, while the analysis of Cunningham’s works offers an essential foundation for understanding the creative freedom and artistic expansion of contemporary dance.
