The Burning House and the Salvation of the Self: ⌜The Lotus Sutra⌟ An Analytical Psychological Interpretation of the Parable of the Burning House
This study interprets the Parable of the Burning House in the Lotus Sutra from the perspective of Analytical Psychology, linking the Buddhist concept of salvation to the process of transformation between Ego and Self. The “burning house” symbolizes the confusion of the Ego identified with desire, while the father’s persuasion represents the salvific activity of the Self emerging from the Unconscious. The methodology is based on literary and symbolic analysis, comparing Jung’s theory of the Ego–Self relationship with the parable, and further exploring universal archetypal structures of psychological transformation through comparisons with Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Hindu fire-purification motifs, and Western religious symbols of salvation. The analysis suggests that the parable of the burning house can be understood not merely as a religious narrative but as a symbolic representation of psychological individuation that integrates crisis and transformation. This indicates that Buddhist salvation and psychological Ego integration can be regarded as two different symbolic expressions of the same inner journey.
