칙 리터러처(chick literature)는 여성의 정서적 직업적 삶을 중점적으로 다루기 때문에 페미니즘 담론을 위한 강력한 매개가 된다. 본 논문은 바르티 키르치너 (Bharti Kirchner)의 Sharmila’s Book과 Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries 를 페미니즘적 투쟁의 관점에서 분석하며, 이를 칙 픽션의 대표적 사례로 고찰한다. 인 도계 미국인 작가 키르치너는 여성 주인공들을 통해 현대 서구 사회와 전통적 인도 문 화 전반에 내재한 젠더 불평등과 가부장적 규범에 도전한다. 본 연구는 샤르밀라 (Sharmila)와 수냐(Sunya)가 지참금 관습, 직업적 경쟁, 문화적 기대를 헤쳐 나가면서 어떻게 자기 정체성과 개별성을 확립해 나가는지를 탐색한다. 키르치너는 등장인물들 이 겪는 시련과 성취를 통해 억압적 제도와 사회문화적 장벽을 극복해가는 여성들의 굳건한 역량을 조명한다. 이러한 이야기들은 자기 발견, 독립, 역량 강화와 같은 칙 리 터러처의 핵심 주제를 강조하며, 세계적 맥락 속에서 변화하는 여성의 역할을 드러낸 다. 나아가 본 연구는 키르치너의 작품이 단순한 상업적 장르를 넘어 젠더 관계를 재 구성하고 도전하는 하나의 문학적 실천이며, 시몬 드 보부아르(Simone de Beauvoir), 베티 프리던(Betty Friedan) 등의 페미니즘 사상과도 맞닿아 있음을 주장한다. 궁극적 으로 이러한 분석은 칙 리터러처가 여성의 경험과 열망에 목소리를 부여함으로써 보다 넓은 페미니즘 운동에 기여할 수 있음을 보여준다.

Chick literature is a potent vehicle for feminist discourse because it often emphasizes women’s emotional and professional lives. This essay examines Bharti Kirchner’s Sharmila’s Book and Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries as examples of chick fiction from the perspective of feminist struggle. The Indo-American author Kirchner challenges gender inequity and patriarchal conventions ingrained in both contemporary Western society and traditional Indian culture through her female heroes. This study examines how Sharmila and Sunya establish their identities and individuality while navigating dowry customs, professional competitiveness, and cultural expectations. Kirchner highlights the tenacity of women in overcoming sociocultural hurdles and challenges posed by repressive institutions through their hardships and victories. These stories highlight self-discovery, independence, and empowerment—all important themes in chick literature—and demonstrate how women’s roles are changing in global situations. This study argues that Kirchner’s writings represent chick literature not only as a commercial genre but also as a form of literary activism that challenges and reshapes gender relations, drawing on feminist ideas from authors such as Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan. Ultimately, this demonstrates how chick lit can lend a voice to women’s experiences and aspirations, thereby contributing to the broader feminist movement.
