생태비평(Eco-criticism)은 문학 분석의 한 분과로서, 문학과 환경 사이 의 복합적 관계를 탐구한다. 현대에 이르러 인간은 자연의 일원으로서 능동적 역할을 수행하던 존재에서, 지구의 중대한 생태적 문제를 야기하는 주체로 변화하였다. 그 결 과 생태적 위기와 존재론적 질문을 다루는 문학 작품들이 점점 더 중요한 의의를 지 니게 되었다. 생태비평은 문학을 환경 인식과 연결함으로써, 문학 텍스트가 주변 환경 에 대한 인식과 이해를 어떻게 반영하고 형성하는지를 새롭게 조명한다. 또한 독자들 로 하여금 인간의 행위가 지니는 환경적 함의와 문학 속 생태적 불안의 형상화를 숙 고하도록 고무한다. 본 연구는 수다 무르티(Sudha Murty)의 소설 􋺷달러 며느리(Dollar Bahu)􋺸를 중심으로 인간과 자연 세계 사이의 복잡한 유대 관계를 분석한다. 카르나타 카(Karnataka)를 배경으로 한 이 소설은 여러 삶의 도전을 겪으면서도 묵묵히 살아가 는 비누타(Vinutha)의 여정을 따라간다. 흥미롭게도, 비누타에게 행복과 내적 회복을 가져다주는 것은 자연과의 깊은 연대감이다. 그녀가 작은 정원을 가꾸기 위해 기울인 노력은 주변 환경에 평화롭고 치유적인 분위기를 조성하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 로써 비누타는 환경을 돌보는 동시에 자신의 고독한 삶을 깊이 울림 있는 방식으로 풍요롭게 만든다.

Eco criticism, a subsection of literary analysis, examines the multifaceted relationship between literature and the environment. In modern times, the role of human kind has shifted from being an active accomplice in nature to becoming a significant ecological concern for the planet. As a result, the rise of literary works that tackle ecological crises and existential questions has gained substantial relevance today. This approach enhances the study of literature by linking it to environmental awareness, offering new ways to understand how literary texts reflect and influence perceptions of the environment around us. It emboldens readers to think about the environmental implications of human engagements and the literary portrayal of ecological trepidations. This research focuses on Sudha Murty’s novel Dollar Bahu, which investigates the intricate bond between humans and the natural world. Set in Karnataka, the story follows Vinutha, who faces significant life challenges, however manages to move on in life. Interestingly, it is Vinuta’s intense association to nature that brings her happiness and helps her overcome her struggles. Her efforts in building up a small garden plays a vital role in creating a peaceful and restorative atmosphere in her surroundings. Thus, Vinutha contributes to nurturing the environment while also enriching her solitary life in a deeply evocative manner.
