본 연구는 1798년 아일랜드 봉기를 첨예한 대립과 분쟁을 양산한 기념 의 주체, 시대, 역사관에 따라 조명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 첫째, 봉기에 연루된 주 요 세 주체인 가톨릭 민족주의 노선, 프로테스탄트 합병주의 노선, 그리고 급진적 공 화주의 노선은 정치적, 역사적 집단 기억을 바탕으로 원 사건을 각각 민족, 제국, 국 가의 정체성 수립에 목적을 두어 봉기를 기념했다. 둘째, 영국-아일랜드 합병 이후 19 세기 초중반에 봉기를 기억하는 방식, 민족주의 운동이 본격적으로 발흥하던 19세기 말 100주년 시기의 기념 방식, 그리고 아일랜드 민족국가가 형성된 20세기 초중반의 기념 방식을 통시적 관점에서 고찰한다. 셋째, 봉기 200주년 기념식을 둘러싸고 수정 주의 사관과 신역사주의 사관이 과거 진상규명과 새로운 미래에 대한 해석 차이로 첨 예하게 대립한 기억 전쟁의 양상을 추적한다.

This study aims to shed new light on the 1798 Irish Rebellion by examining the subjects, periods, and commemorative perspectives that have generated interpretive conflicts and disputes. First, it analyzes how Catholic nationalists, Protestant unionists, and radical republicans used the memory of 1798 to articulate and legitimize their political identities. Second, it adopts a diachronic perspective to trace changes in modes of remembrance across three key periods: the early to mid-nineteenth century, the late nineteenth century, and the early to mid-twentieth century. Third, it investigates the memory wars surrounding the bicentennial commemorations, in which revisionist and new historicist historiographies clashed over competing interpretations of the past and divergent visions of Ireland’s future.
