This study explores how Margery Kempe appropriated sermon rhetoric in a feminine mode in The Book of Margery Kempe, written during late medieval England when women’s preaching was prohibited. While evading the institutional boundary of the pulpit, Kempe performed the essence of preaching through the circumlocutory expression of “conversation and good words.” She specifically adopted the popular preaching structure of a proem-exemplary narrative-prayer, and by constructing her life as an exemplum through the self-appellation “creature,” she transformed personal experience into universal moral instruction. This creative strategy safely conveyed subversive discourse under the strict religious censorship system represented by Arundel’s Constitutions.
