본 논문은 1816년 4월 21일에 바이런이 아내와의 이혼장에 서명한 이후, 당 해 8월까지 그의 이복누이인 어거스타에게 쓴 고백적이면서도 명상적인 시에 나타나는 서로 연관된 주제들, 즉 상실, 역경, 그리고 영적인 강화에 대해 시인 이 어떻게 보여주고 있는가를 분석한다. 그동안 주로 논외의 작품들로써 바이런 자신의 위기의 순간에 쓰인 어거스타에게 , 어거스타에게 보내는 시들 , 어 거스타에게 보내는 서간시 는 시인이기도 한 시적화자가 명성, 희망, 사랑의 유 한성을 어떻게 인식하는가를 보여주며, 이러한 양상은 처음 두 시들에서 화자의 내적갈등으로 발전함을 볼 수 있다. 하지만, 세 번째 시에서 화자는 이러한 침울 한 감정에서 자유로워지고자 하는데, 이러한 면모는 그의 이성을 통한 자기절 제, 운명에 대한 현명한 수용, 그리고 영적 생명력에 대한 열망을 통해 나타나고 있다. 어거스타 시들은 바이런의 후속 작품에 나타나는 불굴의 의지를 가진 인 물들이 주로 보여주는 영적순례 주제를 잘 드러내주고 있다.

This article investigates how Byron elucidates the interlocking concepts of loss, predicament, and spiritual enhancement in three confessional and meditative lyrics addressed to his half-sister, Augusta, composed from April to August 1816 immediately after he signed a deed of separation from his wife on 21 April 1816. Written during a time of personal crisis, less discussed poems like “To Augusta,” “Stanzas to Augusta,” and “Epistle to Augusta” illuminate the poet-speaker’s perceptions of transitory aspects of fame, hope, and love which evolve into further reactions to his internal struggles caused by provocative recognitions in the first two verses. However, the protagonist in the third poem resolves to liberate himself from the depressing sensations and reshapes his mind. The Augusta works mark the recurring motif of spiritual pilgrimage manifested in subsequent persevering characters in Byron’s literary oeuvre.
