본 논문은 한국인 최초의 타문화권 여성 선교사인 김순호의 생애를 고 찰하고, 20세기 초 중국에서 중국 여성들을 대상으로 한 그녀의 선교 활 동이 젠더와 한국인이라는 민족적 정체성에 의해 어떻게 형성되었는지를 분석한다. 본 연구는 젠더화된 전기적 접근을 적용하여, 김순호의 활동을 동아시아 개신교 선교의 초국가적 맥락 속에 위치시킨다. 아울러 비서구 아시아 여성으로서의 그녀의 위치성이 구별되면서도 관계 중심적인 상호 문화적 실천을 가능하게 했음을 주장한다. 김순호는 ‘여성을 위한 여성 사역(Woman’s Work for Woman)’이라는 선교 이념에 기반하여 중국 에서 여성 문해 교육과 여성 중심 사역을 전개하였으며, 중국인 전도부 인들과의 협력적 선교 활동을 수행하였다. 본 논문은 이를 통해 근대 기 독교 선교 역사 속에서 한국 여성 선교사들의 종교적·사회적·상호문화적 기여를 재조명하고 이에 대한 학문적 관심을 새롭게 환기하고자 한다.

This article examines the missionary life of Kim Soon-ho, the first Korean woman missionary to engage in cross-cultural ministry, focusing on how her gender and Korean ethnic identity shaped her work among Chinese women in early twentieth-century China. Employing a gendered and biographical approach, the study situates Kim’s activities within the transnational context of Protestant missions in East Asia. It argues that her position as a non-Western Asian woman enabled distinctive and relational forms of intercultural engagement. Guided by the “Woman’s Work for Woman” ideal, Kim Soon-ho promoted literacy, women-centered ministries, and cooperative work with Chinese Bible women. Ultimately, this article seeks to re-examine and draw renewed scholarly attention to the religious, social, and intercultural contributions of Korean women missionaries within the history of modern Christian missions.
