‘等’은 한반도에 유입된 이후 중세 국어에 이르러 ‘ㅎ ’, ‘’ , ‘’ 로 표기되다가, 현 대 국어의 접미사, 의존 명사, 보조사 ‘(-)들’로 이어졌다. ‘等’-중세 국어 ‘ ㅎ’, ‘ ’, ‘ ’-현대 국어 ‘(-)들’로 이어지는 연쇄는 음운·의미·통사 차원에서 밀접한 연관성을 지닌다. 문자학적으로 ‘等’은 죽간(竹簡)을 정리하는 구체적 행위에서 비롯해, 점차 ‘같음’, ‘무리’, ‘등급’과 같은 추상적이고 범주화된 의미로 확장되었다. ‘等’은 실사에서 허사로 변화하는 과정에서 열거 표지나 복수 접미사로 문법화되었으며, 열거 표지 기능을 수행할 때 경계의 개방성과 폐쇄성이 공존하는 이중적 체계를 형성했다. 현 대 국어 ‘(-)들’은 접미사, 의존 명사, 보조사로 분화되면서도 ‘복수성’이라는 공통 의미 자질을 유지한다. 특히 의존 명사 ‘들’은 ‘等’과 마찬가지로 열거 표지로서 열거의 개방성과 폐쇄성을 모두 지닌다. 따라서 ‘等’과 현대 국어 ‘(-)들’의 의미 및 기능을 비교·분석하는 작업을 통해 현대 국어 ‘(-)들’의 기원을 밝히는 데에 그치지 않고, 중 세 국어와 그보다 앞선 시기의 한국어 문법 체계가 어떠한 변화를 거쳐 왔는지를 구 체적으로 조명할 수 있는 연구 기반을 마련해 줄 것으로 기대한다.

After its introduction to Korea, “等(děng)” appeared in Middle Korean as “ㅎ,” “,” and “,” eventually developing into the modern suffix, dependent noun, and auxiliary particle “(-)deul.” This linguistic sequence shows strong phonological, semantic, and syntactic continuity. Philologically, “等” originated from the act of arranging bamboo slips (竹簡) and gradually acquired abstract meanings such as “equality,” “group,” and “rank.” Through grammaticalization, it shifted from a lexical to a functional role, serving as both an enumeration marker and a plural suffix, with a dual structure of openness and closure that operates as a boundary marker for the relevant set. Moreover, the analysis suggests that semantic bleaching deepens as the enumerated scope becomes more explicitly delimited, linking the interpretation of “等” to degrees of scope limitation. Similarly, modern Korean “(-)deul” has diversified into several grammatical categories while preserving the core meaning of plurality. Especially in its dependent noun form, “deul” parallels “等” as an enumeration marker encompassing both open-ended inclusion and restrictive delimitation. This comparison helps trace the origin of “(-)deul” and illuminates the historical evolution of the Korean grammatical system.
