본 논문은 조지 허버트의 􋺷성전􋺸에 나타난 “완전한 자유”의 개념을 칼뱅의 ‘그리스도인의 자유론’을 바탕으로 내적 자유, 외적 자유, 완전한 자유의 세 단 계로 나누어 고찰하였다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2부 교회 의 종결시 사 랑 (III) 에서 화자는 그리스도의 공로를 통해 죄와 자기 정당화의 굴레에서 벗 어나 하나님과 올바른 관계를 회복하며 내적 자유를 획득한다. 둘째, 3부 교회 군사 에서는 이러한 내적 자유가 역사적·사회적 맥락 속에서 진리를 증언하고 실천하는 외적 자유로 확장된다. 셋째, 􋺷성전􋺸 이후의 소네트 에서 허버트는 형식이 본질을 구현하는 도구로 기능하며, 화자의 자발적 순종과 창조적 실천이 통합된 신앙적 행위로 나타난다. 이를 통해 허버트의 “완전한 자유”가 칼뱅의 그리스도인의 자유 개념과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있음을 확인할 수 있으며, 􋺷성전􋺸 은 개인 경건 시집을 넘어 ‘고통의 신학’에서 ‘치유의 신학’으로 나아가는 신앙 적 순례의 시집으로 이해될 수 있다.

This paper examines the concept of “perfect freedom” in George Herbert’s The Temple through the framework of Calvin’s doctrine of Christian liberty, analyzing it in three stages: inner freedom, outer freedom, and perfect freedom. The conclusions are as follows. First, “Love (III),” positioned at the conclusion of the “The Church” section, functions as a turning point toward inner freedom, symbolizing the beginning of spiritual healing in which the believer is liberated from guilt and the obligation of self-justification through the recognition of Christ’s love. Second, in “The Church Militant,” Herbert poetically articulates outer freedom, whereby the believer who has attained inner freedom bears witness to truth within history under divine providence; here, the exposure of sin and the prophecy of judgment are presented as acts of love oriented toward the restoration of the true Church. Third, the later “Sonnet,” written after The Temple, demonstrates that perfect freedom is achieved not by escaping form but by offering form itself to God. Through this analysis, this study interprets The Temple as a poetic narrative of spiritual pilgrimage, moving from a theology of suffering toward a theology of healing.
