본 연구에서는 한국의 전통탈과 현대 베니스 가면의 조형적 특성 중, 표현적 특성과 미적 가치를 맥시멀리즘적(Maximalism) 관점에서 분석하여 분장 디자인의 표현 영역을 확대하고 유사점과 상이점을 알아 보고 전통과 문화를 재조명하고 현대적인 디자인 이미지와 발상의 도구로 활용 가능성을 제시할 것을 연구의 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 문 헌 연구와 실증연구를 병행하여 선행 연구와 국내외 자료를 참고하였으 며, 탈과 가면의 이미지 작품을 분석 자료로 활용하기 위해 이 분야 전 문가 30인의 검증을 거쳐 이미지를 선정하였다. 본 연구에서는 선행연 구들에서 밝힌 맥시멀리즘의 특성을 참고하여 한국의 전통탈과 베니스 가면에 표현된 분장을 맥시멀리즘의 조형적 표현 특성으로 재분류하였 다. 한국의 전통 탈과 베니스 가면은 확대 과장성, 유희적 상징성, 그로 테스크, 장식성, 혼합성이라는 맥시멀리즘적 조형적 특성을 공유하고 있 는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 이와 같은 조형미는 미래의 독창적인 분장 디자인의 도구로 활용 가능성이 매우 높을 뿐만 아니라 이 연구의 결과 를 바탕으로 분장의 표현 영역을 '오브제 메이크업', '특수 분장‘, ’디지 털 & 아날로그 하이브리드 기법 '등 다양한 분야로 확장할 수 있으며, 또한 이 분야 연구에 따른 기초 자료를 제공함으로써, 향후 우리나라의 탈 분장에 대한 연구가 더욱 촉진되기를 희망한다.

The purpose of this study is to expand the expressive domain of makeup design and propose its potential as a tool for modern design imagery and ideation. This is achieved by analyzing the expressive characteristics and aesthetic values of traditional Korean masks and modern Venice masks through the lens of Maximalism. The research methodology employs a combination of literature review and empirical analysis, referencing preceding studies and international data. To ensure the validity of the visual materials, mask images were selected through a rigorous verification process involving 30 experts in the field. Drawing upon the characteristics of Maximalism identified in prior literature, this study reclassified the makeup elements found in both mask traditions into formative expressive traits of Maximalism. The findings reveal that traditional Korean masks and Venice masks share core Maximalist formative characteristics: expansive exaggeration, playful symbolism, the grotesque, decorativeness, and hybridity. These aesthetic qualities hold significant potential as creative tools for innovative future makeup design. Therefore, these formative aesthetics hold significant potential as a pivotal tool for original makeup design in the future. Based on the findings of this study, the expressive scope of makeup can be expanded into diverse fields such as 'Objet Makeup,' 'Special Effects (SFX) Makeup,' and 'Digital-Analog Hybrid Techniques.' Furthermore, by providing essential foundational data, this research is expected to serve as a catalyst for driving academic discourse and advancing further investigation into the field of Korean mask makeup.
