서예사에서 손과정은 왕희지를 근본으로 하여 자가 성취를 이룬 개성적인 서예가라고 이해되고 있다. 그 이유는 손과정이 왕희지의 고법을 기초로 하면서 형사(形似)보다는 신사(神似) 를 중시한 결과이기 때문이다. 「서보(書譜)」는 손과정(孫過 庭)이 수공삼년(垂拱三年, 687)에 육조(六朝)의 서예관이나 그 영향하에 있는 서론을 계승하여 집대성한 서예 이론이다. 「서 보」는 이왕(二王)을 중심으로 하는 전통적 서예관에 입각하여 창작론·감상론·비평론 등 서예 이론의 모든 영역에 기초와 체 계를 확립하였다. 그 이론의 저변에는 외면적 윤리관을 이루는 유가사상(儒家思想)과 내면을 지탱하는 도가적(道家的) 사유가 융합되어 있다. 따라서 예술 일반에 관한 체계적인 철학 논문 이라고도 할 수 있다. 동시에 자신의 서론을 실기로 제시한 작 품으로서 역대 사현(四賢)들의 작품과 비견(比肩)될 정도로 높 은 빛을 발하고 있다. 이러한 「서보」는 후대인에게 법고창신 (法古創新)의 실례로서 끊임없이 찬미받으며 서예사에서 창작 과 이론의 ‘쌍절(雙絶)’로 칭송되고 있다. 이와 같이 「서보」는 그 자체가 서예 이론인 저작(著作)으로서, 학술적, 예술적 측면 에서 모두 귀중한 자료적 역할을 겸하고 있다는 점에서 서예사 적 가치가 매우 높다. 그러나 기존의 손과정 <서보>에 대한 연구는 철학과 사상적 연구가 대부분이었다. 따라서 본 연구에 서는 기존의 연구에서 벗어나 <서보>의 서체 특징을 분석하여 <서보> 연구에 대한 새로운 방향을 모색하고자 하였다.

<Shu Pu (書譜)> (A Narrative on Calligraphy) by Sun Guoting (孫過庭) is a creative work that presents all the systems of calligraphy theory in practical terms. <Shu Pu> is not only highly valued in calligraphy history in that it combines both academic and artistic aspects, has been constantly praised as a time-honored example to the present day and has been praised as the best models of both creation and theory in calligraphy history. However, most of the studies on Sun Guoting's <Shu Pu> have focused on philosophical and ideological aspects. Therefore, this study sought to find a new direction for the study of <Shu Pu> by analyzing its script beauty apart from the existing studies. In general, in the history of calligraphy, Sun Guoting is understood as a calligrapher who accomplished self-achievement based on the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi (王羲之). A comparative analysis of the works of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Sun Guoting, and Wang Xizhi revealed that Emperor Taizong of Tang tended to accept Wang Xizhi's law with a focus on similar shapes of characters. In contrast, in Sun Guoting's <Shu Pu>, it was easy to find dissimilarities with Wang Xizhi's calligraphy style, revealing that Sun Guoting was based on Wang Xizhi's old law and yet put emphasis on the essential characteristics rather than the similar shapes of characters. Furthermore, <Shu Pu> and similar calligraphy standards, which emphasize emotional warmth, served as the driving force behind the great development of the wild cursive script (狂草) in the flourishing Tang period. The findings of this study are expected to further boost the Korean development of the cursive script as well as the research on the script beauty of <Shu Pu>.
