본 논고는 진주성 촉석루를 대상으로 일제강점기 실측도면, 관련 공문, 한국전쟁 이후 복원 설계도면 등을 종합적으로 검토하여 촉석루 복원의 고증과정과 근거를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 촉석루는 군사·의례·교육·문화 기능이 결합된 성곽 핵심 건축물로, 전란과 소실을 반 복하면서도 지속적으로 중수·중건된 특징을 지닌다. 특히 1957~1960년 중건 과정은 1942 년경 작성된 정밀실측도면과 유리건판, 기존 기단 및 초석 자료 등을 기반으로 이루어진 원 상 복원사업으로 확인된다. 본 연구는 이러한 실증 자료를 통해 촉석루가 단순 재현이 아닌 고증에 기반한 복원임을 입증하고, 성곽 건축 복원에서 요구되는 자료 활용 방식과 고증 절 차를 체계화하였다. 나아가 개별 사례 분석을 통해 성곽 건축 복원의 진정성 확보와 방법론 정립에 기여하고자 한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the process and evidence of historical verification of the restoration of Chokseoknu Pavilion in Jinju-seong, through a comprehensive review of measured drawings produced during the Japanese colonial period, related official documents, and restoration design drawings prepared after the Korean War. Chokseoknu is a key fortress structure that historically integrated military, ceremonial, educational, and cultural functions, and has undergone repeated cycles of destruction and reconstruction. In particular, the reconstruction carried out between 1957 and 1960 is identified as an “original-state restoration” project, based on precision measured drawings and glass plate negatives produced around 1942, as well as data from the surviving foundations and plinths. This study demonstrates that the restoration of Chokseoknu was not a simple visual reconstruction but a rigorously verified process grounded in empirical evidence. Furthermore, it systematizes the methodology of data utilization and verification procedures required for the restoration of fortress architecture. Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to securing authenticity and establishing a methodological framework for the restoration of historic fortress buildings through a detailed case analysis.
