Spirituality constitutes a central dimension of his literary vision, shaping recurring motifs of quest, awakening, and self-realization. His semi-autobiographical novel The Pilgrimage recounts Coelho’s journey along the Road to Santiago, symbolizing a profound movement toward meaning, wisdom, and self-awareness. Beyond its depiction of physical and emotional trials, the narrative charts a deeper psychological and spiritual quest rooted in discipline, faith, and the esoteric teachings of the RAM tradition. This paper examines The Pilgrimage through the lens of Carl Jung’s theory of individuation, which conceptualizes personal growth as the lifelong process of integrating the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche to achieve wholeness. Jungian concepts such as the Self, Shadow, archetypal symbols, and spiritual awakening are employed to analyse Coelho’s encounters, trials, and moments of self-doubt as stages in the individuation process. The pilgrimage functions as an archetypal journey, wherein external challenges reflect inner psychological conflicts, facilitating self-knowledge and transformation. By exploring key symbols, spiritual exercises, and narrative episodes, this study highlights the interplay between psychological maturation and spiritual enlightenment in Coelho’s journey. Ultimately, Coelho’s acceptance of his identity as a writer signifies the culmination of individuation, marking his transition from a fragmented seeker to an integrated Self. The paper thus underscores how Jungian psychology provides a valuable framework for understanding the spiritual and psychological dimensions of The Pilgrimage as a narrative of self-actualization and inner wholeness.
