Rani Manicka’s The Rice Mother investigates the juncture of maternal authority and identity formation of a diasporic SriLankan-Malaysian family and explores the collective identities painted upon the individuals. The endurance and resilience of the protagonist Lakshmi the matriarch plays a role of authority to survive amidst the cultural displacement and the historical trauma by negotiating between sacrifice and power especially during the time of Japanese Occupation. The children have to either embrace or resist the matriarchal authority when the innate tradition and personal aspiration joint hands. The novel also cross examines the maternal sacrifice which preserves and fractures familial bonds. The economical demotion and the intergenerational conflicts make the patriarchal constrains complex, so the motherhood is projected as both empowering and oppressive in the novel. The author suggests that resilience and continuity will be the remedy for generating resentment during the time of alienation. Ultimately the novel depicts that identity and patriarch in a diasporic society is a mixture of negotiation, resistance, and redefinition of maternal legacies.
