The fiction of Shashi Deshpande presents a subtle account of the gendered silence in the patriarchal societal frameworks. This research discusses the ways in which her novels, The Dark Holds No Terrors, That Long Silence, A Matter of Time and The Binding Vine are a manifestation of silence not as the mere non-existence of speech but as a socially constructed situation by the norms and expectations of her cultures and her gendered power relations. Although silence can be used as a tool of repression, the research claims that Deshpande disrupts the traditional feminist discursive conflation of speech and empowerment by introducing silence as a limited but significant type of narrative agency. Close reading and theoretical frameworks that identify with feminist theories show the analysis on the negotiation of subjectivity, self-preservation, and restrained resistance in subject by structural constraints on the part of her female protagonists. This research builds on the already established feminist accounts of voice, agency and gendered experience to Indian English fiction by redefining silence as a strategic space of negotiation, as opposed to voicelessness.
