남한지역의 초기 금속문화는 대략 청동기~초기철기시대에 해당되나, 강원지역처럼 초기 철기시대가 설정되지 않는 곳도 있다. 이에 초기 금속문화는 가장 보편적인 ‘동검’ 유물 기준으로, 금속기가 처음 출현하는 선동검(문화)기와 곡인형의 동검군이 발달하는 비파형 동검(문화)기 및 직인형의 동검군이 발달하는 세형동검(문화)기로 구분하여 살펴보는 것이 합리적이라고 생각된다. 강원지역의 초기 금속문화는 북한강권 중심으로 전개되었는데, 특히 춘천 일원에는 대 형 취락이 발달하고, 요동~서북한권 및 길림~동북한권으로 연결되는 문화요소 외에 서남 한권으로 이어지는 문물교류 양상까지 확인되고 있어 주목된다. 이는 춘천 일대를 중심으 로 차별화된 상호작용의 네트워크가 발달하였으며, 이에 더해 환호취락으로 대표되는 선사 도시가 형성되고 초기 정치체가 등장하였음을 보여주는 것이라고 생각된다. 또한 강원지역의 경우, 비파형동검문화기에는 북한강권(춘천)이 금속기의 주된 소비처로 기능했던 것과 달리 세형동검문화기에는 남한강권(상류)이 금속기의 원료 공급처로 기능했 을 가능성이 높다. 이는 관련 유적들이 처음에는 북한강권으로 밀집되었으나, 나중에는 서 해안권으로 밀집되는 것과 맞물리는 현상이다. 결국 춘천 일대에는 비파형동검문화기 환호 취락으로 대표되는 초기 정치체가 등장하였으나, 세형동검문화기 금속유물 제작·유통 환경 이 원활하지 못해 지속적인 성장에는 도달하지 못하였던 것을 보여준다. 춘천지역 역사문화권과 관련되는 논의에서 초기 금속문화는 별로 주목되지 못한 감이 있다. 이에 춘천지역 선사문화의 정체성도 대외 교류에 기반하는 금속문화의 보편성과 지 역성을 중심으로 재구성할 필요성이 있다. 광업이나 금속문화 측면에서 보면, 강원지역 근 대화의 과정에서 확인되는 지역 정체성은 선사시대의 문화 정체성과 일정하게 연결되는 면이 있다.

The early metal culture in the central region of Korea was centered on the western coast of Gyeonggi region and the Bukhangang River in Gangwon region. In particular, large-scale settlements are developed in Chuncheon, and it is noteworthy that exchanges leading to the southwestern zone of Korea are confirmed in addition to the elements that connect from the Liaodong of China to the Northwest zone of Korea, and from the Jilin of China to Northeast zone of Korea. This is thought to show that a network of interactions differentiated from other regions was developed around Chuncheon, and that a prehistoric city was formed and an early polity emerged. In the case of Gangwon region, during the Liaoning-type bronze daggers culture period, the Bukhangang River (Chuncheon) functioned as the main consumer of metalware. In contrast, it is highly likely that the Namhangang River (upstream) functioned as a raw material source for metalware during the Korean-type bronze sword culture period. This is a phenomenon that coincides with the concentration of related site in the Bukhangang River at first, but later in the West Coast zone or East Coast zone. Eventually, early polity appeared in the Chuncheon area during the development of the Liaoning-type bronze daggers culture, but it did not go through a continuous growth process in the process of spreading the Korean-type bronze daggers culture. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the identity of prehistoric culture in Chuncheon, centering on the universality and locality of metal culture based on external interaction. In terms of mining and metal culture, the regional identity identified in the process of modernization in Gangwon region is constantly connected to the cultural identity of the prehistoric era.
