Selection of Low-Cost Feed and Development of a Moisture Supplementary Diet for Gryllus bimaculatus
The two-spotted cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) is commonly reared without a standardized diet, and the use of fresh vegetables as moisture sources increases rearing costs and risks of pest and pathogen introduction. This study compared the efficiency of commercially available feeds and developed a gel-based supplementary moisture source to replace vegetables (radish and Chinese cabbage). Crickets were reared on powdered commercial diets rabbit, swine, black goat, dog, cattle, duck, and cat feeds and on a mixed-feed control. Survival and individual body mass were tracked. Gel formulations containing agar, sucrose, and acorn jelly powder were prepared and compared with vegetables as moisture sources. The proximate composition (crude protein, crude fat, ash, moisture) of adults was analyzed after freeze-drying and hot-air drying using Association of Official Analytical Chemists International methods. Cat feed yielded the highest adult survival rate (75%), whereas swine feed minimized the feed input and cost to obtain 1 kg of adult biomass (survival rate of 58.93%). The proximate composition of adults did not differ significantly between the cat- and swine-fed groups. As a moisture replacement, the agar–sucrose gel yielded the highest adult survival rate (63.3%), with no significant differences in adult proximate composition compared to the radish treatment. Considering cost-efficiency and production stability, a swine diet as the primary feed combined with agar–sucrose hydration gel appears to produce optimal results and is expected to facilitate the standardization of G. bimaculatus rearing.
