Attractant Effects of Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diode Wavelengths on Adult Gypsy Moths (Lymantria dispar)
This study evaluated the attraction responses of adult gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar Linnaeus) to different ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diode (LED) wavelengths under field conditions. Five UV wavelengths (345, 365, 375, 385, and 395 nm) were tested using six replicated light traps per wavelength in a defoliated forest area in Gunpo, Republic of Korea, over a 4-d period in July 2020. A total of 7,030 adults were captured, of which 90.7% were males and 9.3% were females. Female captures did not differ significantly between wavelengths (F(4, 25) = 2.71, P = 0.0530), indicating limited wavelength-specific attraction. In contrast, male captures differed significantly among treatments (F(4, 25) = 8.69, P = 0.0002), with 385 nm showing the highest attraction efficacy and 345 nm showing the lowest. These results revealed that wavelength selection within the UV range significantly influenced the attraction of male gypsy moths. Overall, these findings provide practical guidance for optimizing UV LED-based monitoring and management strategies for this species.
