과학과 기술의 급속한 발달, 전쟁으로 야기되어 계속되는 세계 정치와 경제 의 불안정성, 그리고 각 개인의 다양한 공적, 사적 갈등은 현 시대를 살아가는 많은 사람들에게 불안과 신앙의 위기를 가져왔다. 매슈 아놀드는 문화적 보고의 중요한 요소인 시가 갖는 특성과 역할을 통하여 종교교육을 강화함으로써 약화 되어가는 종교적 믿음을 활성화 할 수 있다고 주장한다. 본 논문은 아놀드의 시 와 산문 작품들에 대한 분석을 통해 이에 대한 그의 통찰력 있는 다양한 시각을 재조명한다. 아놀드는 영국 시인 중에서 그 어느 누구보다도 시 작품과 종교교 육의 긴밀한 연관성에 대하여 의견을 개진하였던 선구자 역할을 한 작가였다. 그는 이러한 두 분야의 밀접한 관계를 토대로 독자를 교육함으로써, 이들이 영 성뿐만 아니라 인간의 육체적 한계를 초월한 삶과 세계에 대한 안목과 사고력 도 계발할 수 있다고 강조했다. 본 논문은 아놀드의 작품이 문학과 종교적 가치 의 상호 역동적인 관계를 어떻게 표현하고 있는가를 고찰한다. 아울러 그는 시 속에 담긴 지혜와 기쁨을 통해 우리가 고양된 가치를 추구하게 함으로써 삶을 더 풍요롭게 만들 수 있음을 강조하고 있다.

The rapid dominance of science and technology, the ongoing instabilities of world politics and economy caused by wars, and individuals’ public and personal frustrations have brought a crisis of faith to different people in societies across the world. Aware of these critical circumstances, my article revisits Matthew Arnold’s visionary perspectives on rejuvenating belief in their association with religious education which can be strengthened by the nature and roles of poetry as one prominent element of a cultural reservoir. Among English authors, Arnold was a forerunner in facilitating development of the concept of an intimate connection between poetical works and religious education which, he believed, provided readers with power to sustain and rejuvenate their spiritual mindsets and visionary thoughts on life and the world beyond man’s physical territories. This article explores how Arnold’s poems and prose enact such vibrant interplay between literature and religious values, emphasizing the enrichment of their existence by pursuing elevated goals with wisdom and delight. It contends that his penetrating ideas inspire us to confront the limitations and challenges of present circumstances, thereby regenerating a sense of commitment to faith and hope for a brighter future enriched with poetic elevation and spiritual vision.
