􋺷동조자􋺸에 대한 기존 연구는 탈식민주의, 난민 서사, 분열된 정체성에 집중 해 왔다. 그러나 본 논문은 주인공의 종교적 의식과 가톨릭적 상징체계를 중심 으로 서사를 재해석한다. 특히 주인공이 재교육 수용소에서 쓴 자술서를 메타서 사 핵심 장치로 보고 ‘글로 쓴 고해성사’로 규명한다. 이 자술서는 그가 공산당 자아비판 형식을 거부하고 가톨릭 교리 문답 형식에 맞추어 쓴 것으로 개인의 양심․죄의식을 결합해 고해성사의 기능을 수행한다. 아울러 주인공은 이를 통 해 분열된 자아를 서사화하고 치유와 통합을 경험한다. 종교를 부정하는 그의 태도에도 불구하고 성당과 고해성사 형식의 반복은 그가 지닌 종교적 무의식을 드러낸다. 또한 고문, 탈출, 보트 피플 서사는 􋺷요한 묵시록􋺸의 ‘새 하늘과 새 땅’ 개념과 연결되어 죽음과 재생, 구원의 서사로 재구성된다. 결국 메타서사 구 조와 종교적 상징체계는 주인공의 분열된 정체성을 통합하고 상징적 재탄생으 로 이끈다.

This study offers a new interpretation of the novel by examining the protagonist’s religious sensibility and the Catholic symbolic system embedded within the text. Particularly, it identifies his statement as a central meta-narrative device and textual enactment of Catholic confession. Departing from the tradition of Communist self-criticism, it is structured based on the logic of Catholic catechesis, articulating conscience, guilt, and self-examination in a coherent narrative framework. Through this process, he reconstructs his divided self toward psychological healing and identity integration. Although he rejects religious belief, the recurring presence of sacred places, confessional discourse, and Catholic symbolisms reveal an underlying religious unconsciousness operating throughout the novel. Furthermore, the narratives of torture, escape, and the boat-people experience are reconfigured through their connection to the apocalyptic vision of “a New Heaven and a New Earth” in the Book of Revelation, thereby becoming a symbolic narrative of death, rebirth, and salvation.
