박찬욱의 <어쩔수가없다>(2025)는 도널드 E. 웨스트레이크의 소설 􋺷액스􋺸 (1997)를 원작으로 한 영화이다. 이 영화의 기본 이야기 구성은 원작을 바탕으 로 하고 있지만, 작품의 배경과 미장센이 섬세하게 연출되어 인간 삶을 다층적 이고 다면적으로 성찰하도록 한다. 작품의 주인공인 유만수는 [태양 제지]의 한 생산 부서에서 반장으로 일하는 50대 초반의 인물이다. 그는 미국회사에 인수 된 사측으로부터 경영 해고를 위한 대상자 명단을 작성하도록 요구를 받지만, 동료 노동자들의 입장을 옹호하며 사측의 정책에 따르지 않는다. 명리학의 십성 이론을 바탕으로 해석하자면, 동료애와 올바름의 가치를 지향하는 주인공은 비 견과 정인의 삶을 견지하는 사람이다. 그러나 유만수 자신도 결국 해고자에 포 함되고, 한 가족의 가장으로서 생존을 위한 재취업을 위해 분투한다. 이 과정에 서 동료는 경쟁자이자 적으로 변모하고, 함께 살아야 할 사람이 아니라 제거해 야 할 대상이 되고 만다. 그는 재취업의 잠재적 경쟁자 2명을 사살하고, 욕망의 대상자를 살해함으로써 마침내 취업에 성공한다. 그는 경쟁자와 겁탈자 그리고 편법과 잔인함의 심리를 보여주는 겁재와 편인의 삶을 선택함으로써 디지털 기 술과 자본주의가 병존하는 사회에서 인간 마음의 변용을 보여준다.

Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice is a film which parodies The Ax, a novel by Donald E. Westlake. The film echoes the basic plot of the novel, though the excellence of setting and mise-en-scène in high-caliber film-making transcends mere entertainment. Yoo Man-su as a foreman of Taeyang Paper Mill opposes the company’s policy of a large-scale layoffs due to restructuring defending workers’ right to survival. According to the Theory of Ten Stars in Myeongrihak, the main character lives the Life of Companion and Resource Stars that emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence between human beings and community. After being dismissed by the company, however, the protagonist exerts to get a job to survive and support his family murdering potential rivals and the person who he desires. His life stands for the Life of Rob Wealth and Unconventional Resource Stars that reflects competitive, egoistic, sneaky, and action-oriented psychologies. The film portrays the transformation of capitalist human being in the digital technology society.
