본 논문은 1970년대 한국미술에서 전개된 추상담론을 동양화단을 중심으로 고찰한다. 특히 동양화단의 추상 및 비구상 담론이 형성되는 과정을 살펴보고 이를 통해 정립된 ‘동양적 추상’ 담론의 이론적 의미를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 1970년 《대한민국미술전람회》 동양화부 비구상부 신설을 계기로 동양화단에서는 추상이 주요 의제로 부상하였다. 1970년대 동양화는 현대 회화로서 동시대성을 추구하며 같은 시기에 서양화단에서 형성된 비구상론을 공유하는 한편, 동양화의 고유한 추상성을 규명해야 하는 이중적인 과제에 직면하였다. 이는 동시기 한국미술 에서 제기된 ‘한국성’ 탐색과도 긴밀하게 맞물려 전개되었다. 특히 동양화 추상 담론은 동양화가 본질적으로 추상성을 지닌다는 인식에 기반하 여, 청동기 문양, 고구려 고분벽화, 서(書) 등 전통 조형물을 추상의 원류로 재해석하였다. 이러한 과정에서 동양화 추상은 자연의 리듬과 ‘기운 생동’을 핵심 원리로 하는 통합적 조형 개념으로 정식화되었으며, 서양 추상과 구별되는 독자적 범주로 규정되었다. 이러한 담론은 이후 동양화 의 정체성을 규정하는 지속적인 이론적 틀로 작용하며, 1980년대 수묵화운동 등 후속 논의에도 영향을 미친 것으로 평가된다.

This paper investigates the formation of discourses on abstract art within Korean ink painting in the 1970s, focusing on the theoretical implications of ‘Oriental abstraction.’ With the establishment of a non-objective category in the Oriental painting division of the National Art Exhibition of Korea in 1970, abstraction became closely tied to defining “Koreanness.” Asserting that abstraction was inherent in Oriental painting, artists and critics emphasized premodern sources such as Bronze Age patterns, Goguryeo tomb murals, and calligraphy as its origins. Accordingly, abstraction in Korean ink painting was reframed not as a Western import but as a formal principle rooted in the rhythm of nature and qi-yun-sheng-dong (vital resonance). This paper argues that this construction of ‘Oriental abstraction’ provided a theoretical basis for legitimizing Korean ink painting and contributed to the development of ink painting movements in the 1980s.
