A Study on Development of a Device for Reducing Eccentric Behavior in Elevator Car Structural Systems under Seismic Conditions
The purpose of this study is to develop a mechanical device to reduce eccentric behavior in elevator car structural systems under seismic loads and to verify its structural effectiveness through numerical analysis and experimental validation. Eccentric behavior in elevator car structural systems can be caused by uneven passenger or cargo loading, asymmetry in structural stiffness, differences in contact conditions between guide shoes and guide rails, and deformation transfer from the building structure. These factors may result in torsional deformation of the car frame, imbalance in guide contact, door misalignment, increased vibration, and reduced operational stability. To address this issue, a passive eccentric behavior reduction device based on a wire rope and pulley system was proposed. Structural responses were evaluated using a three-dimensional model based on MIDAS Meshfree 2016 and response spectrum analysis, and full-scale experimental testing was conducted to compare the structural responses before and after the application of the device. The analysis results showed that the total displacement of the elevator car structure decreased by approximately 24.53%, and the maximum displacement decreased by about 26.4% with the application of the device. In addition, experimental results indicated that the car tilt decreased by up to 0.55°, and the car displacement decreased by up to 28 mm, while the operational vibration of the elevator was found to be below the acceptable range according to the relevant criteria. These results demonstrate that the proposed device can effectively mitigate eccentric responses of the elevator car structure under seismic or external disturbances and improve both structural safety and operational stability. This study is significant in that it proposes a structural response reduction technology for the elevator car structure itself, which is directly used by passengers, extending beyond conventional seismic approaches focused on installation structures.
