The Relationship between Acoustic-Protective Equipment Composite Stimuli and Safety Behavior among Workers in Enclosed Spaces : A Mediation Analysis Based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response(SOR) Model
Reflected sound, reverberation, and the wearing of dust masks and earplugs in enclosed workspaces—including legally defined confined spaces—may compromise speech intelligibility and the recognition of hazard signals; however, domestic occupational safety research has predominantly focused on chemical and procedural risk factors. This study operationally defined an "enclosed space" as a workspace with restricted access, pronounced reverberation and reflected sound, and adequate atmospheric conditions, and empirically examined the structural pathway through which acoustic and personal protective equipment (PPE) stimuli relate to safety behavior via psychological burden, based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model. Methods. Self-administered survey data from 235 workers in shipbuilding/marine, petrochemical, water and sewage, power generation, and manufacturing industries were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 (IBM Corp.) and PROCESS Macro (Version 4.1, Model 4) with 5,000 bootstrap resamples and bias-corrected and accelerated (BCa) 95% confidence intervals. The path from acoustic-PPE composite stimuli (S) to safety behavior (R) via psychological burden (O) was statistically significant (β = .799 and β = .460, respectively), and the direct effect of stimuli on safety behavior was also significant (β = .331). The indirect effect was ab = .367 (95% BCa CI [.246, .491]), supporting partial mediation by psychological burden. The indirect path accounted for 52.58% and the direct path for 47.42% of the total effect, indicating a "dual-path structure." Differential pathway patterns emerged across safety-behavior subdimensions: indirect-only for near-miss/work disruption (Rc), direct-dominant for PPE removal/adjustment (Rv, β = .623), and direct-only for communicative compensation (Rcp). Of the respondents, 97.0% endorsed the need to improve communication conditions in enclosed spaces. Enclosedspace safety management should be redesigned to integrate acoustic environment improvement with the mitigation of workers' psychological burden.
