A Study on the Establishment of ESG Management System for Small and Medium Businesses Based on IWA 48:2024 Guidelines
This study aims to propose an integrated ESG management system model for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based on the IWA 48:2024 guidelines to address the tightening ESG regulatory environment within global supply chains. Recognizing that existing ISO management systems are fragmented around specific sectors (such as quality or environment) and thus limited in accommodating the holistic requirements of ESG, this research designs a structured management process centered on the IWA 48:2024 guidelines published in November 2024. To ensure academic rigor, a hybrid analytical approach combining generative AI (ChatGPT-4o) with content validity verification (CVI) by an expert panel was adopted. Through this process, we mapped the alignment between international standards—such as IWA 48:2024, GRI Standards, and ISO 26000—and the operational data of domestic SMEs, resulting in the development of 15 core management procedures. To validate the practical value of the proposed model, it was implemented and applied to a manufacturing firm, Company A. The results demonstrated significant improvements, including achieving a passing score (60 points or higher) for ESG management certification —surpassing pre-assessment levels—and enhancing the firm's capacity to respond to supply chain due diligence. This study extends beyond existing ESG research, which has largely remained at a theoretical level, by providing a customized management system model that accounts for organizational scale and resource constraints. It offers both academic and practical significance by establishing a foundation for SMEs to construct voluntary and systematic ESG implementation pathways. This model can serve as a realistic roadmap for domestic SMEs to secure sustainable competitive advantages in global supply chains and facilitate entry into global markets through objective certification processes.
