This study aims to identify the distinct characteristics of Housing Feng Shui(陽宅風水), as opposed to Grave Feng Shui(陰宅風水), by analyzing the significance of substitute trees used to represent the Four Gods(四神). Unlike the Four Gods in Grave Feng Shui, the Four Guardian Spirits in Housing Feng Shui correspond to specific geographical and physical features: the Black Tortoise(玄武) represents a mountain (山), the Blue Dragon(靑龍) a river (川), the White Tiger(白虎) a road (道), and the Red Phoenix(朱雀) a pond (澤). This conceptual framework is referred to as the Mountain-River-Road-Pond(山川道澤) correspondence. In cases where any of these four Gods are absent in the surrounding environment, specific trees are planted as substitutes to supplement and harmonize the missing energy (Bibo, 裨 補). This practice is known as "complementary landscaping with alternative trees for the Four Gods" The findings of this study define the significance of substitute trees as follows: First, as a tree that substitutes for the Blue Dragon, the peach tree carries dual symbolism: exorcising evil spirits(鬼払い) and eternal youth(不老長生). According to the Shan Hai Jing (山海經), there is a folk belief that peach trees drive away ghosts from the direction of the "Demon Gate (鬼門).“ Furthermore, the willow tree replaces the Blue Dragon of the East due to its vitality, which symbolizes spring. This study also revealed that the willow tree functions to exorcise and ward off evil spirits(辟邪), based on the tradition that spirits fear willow leaves because of their sword-like appearance. Second, the plum tree(梅), which serves as a substitute for the Red Phoenix, has been revered as a symbol of integrity in Confucianism and as an embodiment of Zen monks in Buddhism. Furthermore, the plum fruit is regarded as a symbol of fertility. In addition, the jujube tree(棗) signifies the prosperity of descendants and fertility, while its red color symbolizes robust vitality. Third, the wild apple(柰), which substitutes for the Black Tortoise, functioned as a relief crop during periods of famine. Meanwhile, the apricot tree served as a symbol of entry into officialdom. It held the historical significance of Haeng-won (杏園,Apricot Garden), representing success in the civil service examination, and Haeng-dan (杏壇, Apricot Altar), denoting a sacred place of scholarship and learning. Fourth, the gardenia(梔), which substitutes for the White Tiger, was utilized not only for consumption but also as a natural dye for fabrics. Similarly, the elm tree (楡) was used as a primary material for crafting various household wooden containers, demonstrating a close connection to the practicalities of daily life. Ultimately, it can be concluded that the Four Godsof housimg sites (陽宅), in contrast to those of grave sites(陰宅), served a practical auxiliary function in daily life. This extended beyond mere symbolism, as these substitute trees provided vital resources such as medicinal ingredients and food supplies, thereby supporting the livelihoods of the living.
