Blue
Purpose : This study aimed to examine spatial frequency–specific changes in contrast sensitivity in individuals wearing blue lenses with varying luminous transmittance, and to investigate deviations from the normal range and shifts in the peak spatial frequency of the contrast sensitivity function. Methods : Contrast sensitivity was measured at 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 18 cpd in 30 subjects (corrected visual acuity≥0.9) wearing blue lenses with luminous transmittance ranging from 7.6% to 62.4%. The amount and rate of contrast sensitivity decrease, normal range deviations, and peak shifts of the contrast sensitivity function were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Results : As luminous transmittance decreased, contrast sensitivity declined at all spatial frequencies, initially falling below the normal range at 18 cpd under 18.1% luminous transmittance. The largest magnitude decrease occurred at 6 cpd, whereas the highest decrease rate was observed at 18 cpd, indicating greater sensitivity of higher spatial frequencies to reduced luminous transmittance. The peak spatial frequency shifted from 6 to 3 and then to 1.5 cpd. Conclusion : As luminous transmittance decreases, contrast sensitivity decreases, deviations from the normal range occur, and the peak of the contrast sensitivity function shifts. The luminous transmittance required to maintain normal contrast sensitivity ranged between approximately 18.1% and 23.9%. These findings provide a basis for interpreting spatial frequency–specific contrast sensitivity changes resulting from reduced luminous transmittance.
