Purpose : This study examined the prevalence of depression and visual function discomfort(VFD) in university students and analyzed differences by sociodemographic characteristics and their correlations. Methods : Data from 85 university students were collected via an online survey in December 2025. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and VFD was evaluated with five-item scale measuring ocular symptoms and their impact on daily functioning. A Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman rank correlation analysis were performed. Results : The mean PHQ-9 score was 6.06±6.57, and 49.41% reported mild or greater depressive symptoms. The mean VFD total score was 9.38±3.15, with dry eye sensation (2.16± 1.01) and eye fatigue during near work(2.04±0.93) scoring highest. Significant differences in VFD were found by sex(p=0.009), and PHQ-9 scores differed significantly by daily digital device use(p=0.027). VFD increased with PHQ-9 severity(H=28.689, p<0.001), and a significant positive correlation was found between PHQ-9 and VFD total scores(ρ=0.564, p<0.001). Conclusion : Depression and VFD showed a significant positive correlation in university students. A comprehensive health promotion program integrating visual function management and mental health care is needed.
