본 연구는 한국 감독 박찬욱의 영화 <Decision to Leave>를 연구 대상으로 삼아, Gustav Mahler의 Symphony No. 5 제4악 장 아다지에토(Adagietto)가 영화에서 어떻게 활용되는지를 중 심으로 고전음악이 현대 영화 서사에서 수행하는 복합적 기능 을 고찰한다. 연구는 음악 분석과 영화 서사 분석을 결합한 방 법을 통해 음악 구조적 특성, 구체적 장면, 인물 관계라는 세 가지 층위에서 분석을 전개한다. 연구 결과,아다지에토 (Adagietto)는 단순한 감정 표현의 매개를 넘어 반복적 등장 속 에서 안정적인 지시성을 지닌 주제 동기로 기능하며, 인물 관 계 형성과 서사 전개에 적극적으로 참여하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 해당 음악은 서사 구조 속에서 단계적 분포를 보이며 영 화의 플롯 전개와 대응 관계를 형성하고, 상징적 차원에서는 ‘운명 예시’의 기능까지 수행한다. 본 연구는 고전음악이 현대 영화 맥락에서 작동하는 복합적 기능 메커니즘을 밝혀내며, 아 다지에토(Adagietto)의 활용이 ‘감정 매개’에서 ‘서사 구조’, 나 아가 ‘상징 메커니즘’으로 확장되는 다층적 전이를 보여준다는 점을 제시한다. 이러한 기능적 통합은 현대 영화 음악 운용의 전형적 사례를 형성하며, 영상 텍스트에서 고전음악의 재맥락 화 과정을 이해하는 데 중요한 사례 연구를 제공한다.

Taking the film 《Decision to Leave》by South Korean director Park Chan-wook as its research object, this paper focuses on the application of the fourth movement, Adagietto, of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5to explore the manifold functions of classical music in contemporary cinematic narrative. By integrating musical analysis with film narrative theory, the study examines three dimensions: musical structural characteristics, specific filmic scenes, and character relationships. The findings indicate that in the film, the Adagiettoserves not only as a medium for emotional expression but also evolves into a thematic motif with stable referentiality through its recurrence, actively participating in the construction of character relations and narrative progression. Simultaneously, the music exhibits a staged distribution within the narrative structure that corresponds with the plot’s development, assuming the function of a "fatalistic foreshadowing" on a symbolic level. This research reveals a complex functional mechanism of classical music within the contemporary cinematic context. The use of the Adagiettoin the film demonstrates a multi-level transition from "emotional medium" to "narrative structure" and ultimately to a "symbolic mechanism." This functional integration constitutes a quintessential paradigm of contemporary film music operation, offering a pioneering case study for understanding the re-contextualization of classical music within visual texts.
