세계화의 진전이 가속화됨에 따라 서로 다른 문화 간의 교류 와 충돌은 더욱 빈번해지고 있다. 민족 수공예는 문화적 기억 과 지역적 특색을 담아내는 중요한 매개체로서, 그 문화적 가 치와 시장 가능성으로 인해 학계와 산업계의 주목을 받고 있 다. 본 연구는 미국 원주민 장신구를 대상으로 문헌분석과 사 례연구를 통해 그 기원과 발전 과정을 고찰하고, 시대별 공예 적 특성과 문화적 표현 양상을 분석하였다. 특히 하비 시기를 중심으로 외래 문화 요소와 원주민 고유 문화가 충돌·융합하는 과정, 그리고 이러한 변화가 장신구의 디자인 이념, 제작 기법, 양식적 표현에 미친 영향을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 또한 조형, 재료, 토템 기호의 세 측면에서 미국 원주민 장신구에 내재된 문화적 의미를 해석하였다. 연구 결과, 미국 원주민 장신구는 전통 공예와 현대 디자인 의 유기적 융합을 통해 뚜렷한 민족성과 독자적 미학을 지닌 조형 체계를 형성해 왔다. 특히 토템 문화 기호의 계승과 변용 은 민족 문화의 정체성을 유지하는 동시에 민족 장신구의 지속 가능한 발전에 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 본 연구는 미국 원 주민 장신구에 대한 논의를 확장하고, 전통 공예의 현대적 전 환과 민족 수공예의 전승 및 혁신에 유의미한 시사점을 제시한 다.

As globalization accelerates, exchanges and conflicts among different cultures have become increasingly frequent. As important carriers of cultural memory and regional identity, ethnic handicrafts have attracted growing attention from both academia and industry for their cultural value and market potential. This study examines Native American jewelry in the United States through literature review and case analysis, focusing on its origins, historical development, and craft characteristics across different periods. Particular attention is given to the Harvey era, analyzing the interaction and fusion between external cultural influences and indigenous traditions, as well as their impact on design concepts, production techniques, and stylistic expression. In addition, the study interprets the cultural meanings embedded in Native American jewelry from three perspectives: form, material, and totemic symbolism. The findings show that Native American jewelry has developed a distinctive aesthetic system with strong ethnic characteristics through the organic integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. The inheritance and transformation of totemic symbols, in particular, provide important implications for the sustainable development of ethnic handicrafts.
