The Evolution of Technology and the Shifting Crises: From the Age of Mechanical Reproduction to the Era of AGI
The purpose of this study is to examine how the relationship between art and humanity is evolving within the technological trajectory spanning from the era of mechanical reproduction to the era of artificial intelligence (AI), and forward into the future era of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In particular, this study highlights that alongside technological advancements, the locus of crisis has shifted from art itself to the artist, and ultimately to human existence. To this end, Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura, Michel Foucault’s subject theory and author-function, and Jean Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra are utilized as the primary theoretical frameworks. Benjamin’s concept of aura is employed to analyze the process through which the mode of art's existence transformed as the uniqueness and presence of artworks were diminished in the era of mechanical reproduction. Based on Foucault’s subject theory, this study investigates how the creative subject in the AI era is being reconstituted from an individual human-centric model into a networked structure where data, algorithms, platforms, and users converge. Furthermore, by applying Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra, it analyzes how AI-generated images and information operate beyond the realm of representing reality, actively configuring our perception of reality itself. The findings indicate that while the core dilemma of the mechanical reproduction era was a "crisis of art," characterized by the weakening of the uniqueness and authority of artworks, the central issue of the AI era is transitioning into a "crisis of the artist," defined by the shifting position and role of the creative subject. Moreover, the study confirms that the future development of AGI and superintelligence carries the potential to fundamentally destabilize the anthropocentric concept of the subject, expanding into a "crisis of humanity" that forces a reevaluation of human perception and the meaning of existence. In conclusion, art in the era of artificial intelligence is not merely a product of technological innovation, but a philosophical event that reshapes our understanding of art, the artist, and human existence. Therefore, this study suggests that the crucial task for future society lies not in evaluating the capabilities of AI, but in newly seeking what kind of existence humans will maintain within an environment of technological coexistence.
