A Study on the Combination of Lyrics and Music in Korean and Chinese Chart Ballads from 2015 to 2025: Focusing on the Comparison of Emotional Expression
This study compares the patterns of emotional expression in Korean and Chinese chart ballads from 2015 to 2025, focusing on ballad songs listed on Korea’s Melon annual charts and China’s QQ Music charts. A total of 66 songs, consisting of 33 Korean songs and 33 Chinese songs, were selected for analysis in order to identify the shared emotional foundations and different expressive modes of ballads in the two countries. The purpose of this study is to understand how popular lyricism in East Asia organizes and regulates emotion in the era of digital platforms. This study constructed a full sample list of 66 songs, step-by-step coding tables, auxiliary music analysis tables, and expert cross-checking materials, and then compressed and reorganized them within the scope of an academic article. The analysis applied open coding, axial coding, and selective coding based on grounded theory, examining both the full lyrics and the core section of the first chorus. The music analysis focused on melodic progression, tempo, vocal tone, arrangement atmosphere, the emotional peak of the chorus, and the categories of lyric-music combination. The findings show that the Korean and Chinese samples share common emotions such as longing and love, healing through separation and comfort, solitude and self-reflection, and growth and real-life pressure. The Korean samples tend to condense emotion and form emotional peaks through short key phrases, repetition, inner monologue, high-register movement in the chorus, and vocal openness. By contrast, the Chinese samples tend to expand and gradually accumulate emotion in a narrative manner through scene development, relational context, temporal and spatial imagery, stable melodies, and narrative vocal delivery. These differences, of course, should not be understood as essential characteristics of Korean and Chinese music as a whole, but rather as expressive tendencies derived from the samples analyzed in this study. Nevertheless, this study has significance in that it analyzes emotional expression in chart ballads not only through lyrics but also in combination with musical implementation.
