Filial Piety in Hoesimgok: Focusing on the Sutra on the Profound Kindness of Parents
This study aims to examine how the filial piety ideology embodied in Hoesimgok, a traditional Korean vocal narrative song, is closely related to and developed upon the ideological foundation of the Buddhist scripture The Sutra on the Deep Kindness of Parents (Bumo Eunjoong Gyeong). The scripture systematically presents the ten great benevolences bestowed by parents upon their children, emphasizing filial piety as a fundamental moral duty that must be fulfilled by human beings. In Hoesimgok, these doctrinal teachings are restructured into an emotional and narrative form, leading listeners to reflect upon their lives and recognize parental grace. In particular, Hoesimgok focuses on evoking the sacrifices and devotion of parents through vivid emotional expression, thereby eliciting deep empathy. While The Sutra on the Deep Kindness of Parents delivers filial ethics through didactic and doctrinal discourse, Hoesimgok amplifies emotional resonance by integrating music and storytelling, ultimately inducing repentance and moral awakening. Through the dramatic contrast between parental love and filial ingratitude, the song effectively reinforces the necessity of practicing filial piety. Furthermore, both texts share the underlying principles of karmic retribution and rebirth, emphasizing the consequences of failing to repay parental kindness. The scripture warns of the karmic consequences awaiting those who neglect their filial duties, and Hoesimgok similarly underscores that the effects of unfilial behavior may extend into the afterlife. This shared perspective elevates filial piety from a mere ethical norm to a fundamental principle sustaining the moral order of human existence. In conclusion, although Hoesimgok and The Sutra on the Deep Kindness of Parents adopt different forms ─ musical expression and religious doctrine ─ they function in a complementary manner in promoting moral edification centered on filial piety. Their interrelation demonstrates how filial ideology in traditional Korean society was deepened and disseminated through the integration of religion and artistic expression.
