A Phenomenological Study of Generation Z North Korean Defectors' Perceptions of Diaspora and Unification
This study qualitatively explores the life trajectories of Generation Z North Korean refugee college students settled in South Korea, tracing the empirical contexts in which their perceptions of unification are formed. Their views on unification originate from their experiences of deprivation in North Korea and the process of defection. However, after settling in the South, these perceptions evolved into a new form that transcends traditional unification discourses, shaped by the realities of university life and social competition. These students tend to view unification as a possibility for personal growth rather than a purely nationalistic ideal. The findings suggest that despite facing social stigma and discrimination, Gen Z North Korean refugee students are making proactive efforts to transform their unique backgrounds into "unification competencies." This study holds significant academic value by centering the voices of North Korean defectors—rather than relying solely on South Korean perspectives—to derive practical and effective components for the discourse on unification.
