Regional Variations in Female Desire and the Structure of the Symbolic Order in Late Joseon Naebanggasa : A Lacanian Comparative Study
This study examines the regional variation in the structure of female desire in naebanggasa, a genre of women’s literature from the late Joseon period. In particular, it extends the Lacanian concept of the Symbolic order by conceptualizing region as a space organized by the density and mode of operation of social norms, and conducts a comparative analysis of naebanggasa from the Andong and non-Andong regions. The findings reveal that in the Andong region, where the Symbolic order operates with strong intensity, desire is organized in a predominantly Other-oriented manner, characterized by the repetition of normative signifiers and the indirect expression of emotion. In contrast, in non-Andong regions, where the Symbolic order is relatively reconfigured, desire is more complexly structured, and personal emotions and experiences are expressed more directly. These differences suggest that the intensity and mode of operation of the Symbolic order structurally shape the formation and expression of desire. By reinterpreting naebanggasa from a regional perspective, this study aims to offer new possibilities for the interpretation of classical Korean literature.
