An Analysis of the Gross Output Structure of the Korean Economy by Firm Size in South Korea
This study analyzes the production structure of the Korean economy by firm size using Gross Output(GO) to capture inter-enterprise transaction structures that are often overlooked by GDP. Utilizing microdata from the Statistical Business Register (SBR), the study estimates that total GO reached approximately KRW 5,293 trillion in 2023, which is 2.2 times the size of GDP.Notably, medium-sized enterprises(35.1%) and micro-enterprises (24.5%) account for about 60% of total GO, confirming their role as the fundamental backbone of the production network. Furthermore, the estimates demonstrate a high consistency(79– 97%) with the National Accounts, verifying the empirical feasibility of GO estimation. This research is significant as it expands traditional industry-oriented production analysis to a firm-size perspective. The findings suggest the need for an integrated policy framework that considers firm-specific production networks and policy delivery structures.
