초록

The Busan region has been inhabited since prehistoric times by people whose livelihoods were based on fishing, and it remains the hub of Korea’s fisheries industry today. However, efforts to utilize fisheries cultural heritage in a manner befitting Busan’s status as a fisheries-centered city have been insufficient. This study sought ways to restore Busan’s fisheries cultural heritage in order to reinforce Busan’s identity as a fisheries-centered city. To this end, field surveys and literature reviews were first conducted to identify the current locations of fisheries cultural heritage in the the Busan region from prehistoric times onward. Based on the confirmed locations, the regional distribution characteristics of fisheries cultural heritage were analyzed. The results showed that Busan’s fisheries cultural heritage is concentrated mainly in counties with coastlines and rivers, and that counties are located in the eastern, southern, and western parts of Busan Metropolitan City. Among the fisheries cultural heritage sites in the Busan region, the largest number consisted of sites related to primary industries, such as net fisheries, fishing weirs (Eojeon), and salt farms. In terms of the number of individual fisheries cultural heritage (companies, artifacts, historic sites, etc.), businesses related to fisheries manufacturing and distribution belonging to secondary and tertiary industries were the most numerous. These businesses were concentrated in the old downtown area of Busan-bu, and most were established during the Japanese colonial period. Methods for restoring fisheries cultural heritage can be divided into approaches centered on historic sites and those centered on themes. Site-centered restoration methods can be classified into four types according to the tangible or intangible nature of fisheries cultural heritage. Theme-centered restoration methods, on the other hand, utilize themes developed based on the cultural significance of the relevant area. For example, areas where fisheries manufacturing and distribution companies were mainly established during the Japanese colonial period could be developed as districts of modern fisheries cultural heritage. Near the shell midden sites of Dongsam-dong and Jodo in Yeongdo-gu, a shell midden theme park could be established. The Dadaepo coast in Saha-gu, known as a rich repository of marine resources, could be developed into a culports center. Myeongji-do in Gangseo-gu, which was the foremost salt-production area during the Joseon Dynasty, could be developed into a boiled salt (Jayeom) theme park.
