This study identifies promising new industries utilizing seaweed in Re. of Korea and examines their current positions within the industry life cycle. Through expert interviews and surveys across industry, academia, research institutes, and government, seaweed-based industries were classified into six categories, including functional and alternative foods, feed and feed additives, bio and pharmaceutical industries, beauty and personal care, functional materials, and energy and environmental industries. Qualitative evaluation criteria-such as raw material availability, technological feasibility, market growth potential, economic feasibility, and sustainability-were applied to assess industrial potential. Based on these criteria, functional and alternative food industries and beauty and personal care industries were identified as the most promising sectors. In addition, this study analyzes the industry life cycle stages of each sector using a framework consisting of introduction, growth, adjustment, maturity, and decline stages. The results show that most seaweed-based industries in Re. of Korea are positioned in the growth or adjustment stages, while the beauty and personal care industry has entered the maturity stage. These findings suggest that differentiated policy strategies aligned with industry life cycle stages are essential for promoting sustainable development and diversification of seaweed-based industries in Rep. of Korea.

Amid increasing economic damages from climate change and geopolitical risks, this study examines the dynamic relationships between changes in fisheries conditions and offshore angling fishery enterprises employing an autoregressive distributed lag model with time-series data from 1989 to 2024. The empirical results indicate that increases in sea surface temperature, vessel horsepower, and crude oil prices are negatively associated with catch in the long run, while temporary positive associations with catch are observed in the short run. In addition, dynamic simulations assuming positive shocks to sea surface temperature and crude oil prices suggest a long-run decline in catch following each shock. Based on these findings, this study proposes several policy implications. First, to ensure the sustainability of fishery enterprises, stock assessment methods should be enhanced to account for potential declines in fishery resources due to climate change. Second, a vessel modernization fund involving private financial institutions is needed to promote the replacement of vessels with improved energy efficiency. Third, revising the tax-free petroleum scheme is required to allow unused fuel allocated to each vessel to be accumulated as reserves. Finally, discussions on setting an upper limit on vessel horsepower are warranted, given its significant influence on fishing intensity.

The Busan region has been inhabited since prehistoric times by people whose livelihoods were based on fishing, and it remains the hub of Korea’s fisheries industry today. However, efforts to utilize fisheries cultural heritage in a manner befitting Busan’s status as a fisheries-centered city have been insufficient. This study sought ways to restore Busan’s fisheries cultural heritage in order to reinforce Busan’s identity as a fisheries-centered city. To this end, field surveys and literature reviews were first conducted to identify the current locations of fisheries cultural heritage in the the Busan region from prehistoric times onward. Based on the confirmed locations, the regional distribution characteristics of fisheries cultural heritage were analyzed. The results showed that Busan’s fisheries cultural heritage is concentrated mainly in counties with coastlines and rivers, and that counties are located in the eastern, southern, and western parts of Busan Metropolitan City. Among the fisheries cultural heritage sites in the Busan region, the largest number consisted of sites related to primary industries, such as net fisheries, fishing weirs (Eojeon), and salt farms. In terms of the number of individual fisheries cultural heritage (companies, artifacts, historic sites, etc.), businesses related to fisheries manufacturing and distribution belonging to secondary and tertiary industries were the most numerous. These businesses were concentrated in the old downtown area of Busan-bu, and most were established during the Japanese colonial period. Methods for restoring fisheries cultural heritage can be divided into approaches centered on historic sites and those centered on themes. Site-centered restoration methods can be classified into four types according to the tangible or intangible nature of fisheries cultural heritage. Theme-centered restoration methods, on the other hand, utilize themes developed based on the cultural significance of the relevant area. For example, areas where fisheries manufacturing and distribution companies were mainly established during the Japanese colonial period could be developed as districts of modern fisheries cultural heritage. Near the shell midden sites of Dongsam-dong and Jodo in Yeongdo-gu, a shell midden theme park could be established. The Dadaepo coast in Saha-gu, known as a rich repository of marine resources, could be developed into a culports center. Myeongji-do in Gangseo-gu, which was the foremost salt-production area during the Joseon Dynasty, could be developed into a boiled salt (Jayeom) theme park.

This study examines the perceptions and acceptance of digital transformation among seafood distribution stakeholders. A survey was conducted to analyze their understanding, utilization, adoption needs, attitudes, and perceived barriers related to digital technologies. The results show that overall awareness and utilization levels remain low, with significant generational differences observed. While respondents generally recognize the necessity of digital transformation, many exhibit passive attitudes toward adoption and lack concrete implementation plans. Major barriers include aging workforce, insufficient technical understanding, and financial burden, whereas expected benefits are mainly related to improvements in work efficiency. The findings suggest that targeted education, financial support, and practical policy measures are required to promote digital transformation in the seafood distribution sector.

This study investigates the structural drivers of consumer evaluation in the mature Korea online frozen food market. Using web-crawled data from a major retail platform, we integrate structured variables (price, ratings, review volume) with unstructured review text to examine how price, social proof, experiential value, and logistics reliability jointly shape consumer satisfaction. Results indicate that unit price is negatively associated with ratings, while review volume functions as social proof that reduces perceived uncertainty. A moderation analysis reveals a standardization effect : consumers purchasing highly processed convenience foods exhibit greater price sensitivity than those purchasing less processed frozen ingredients. Text mining grounded in the Kano Model further differentiates experiential motivators(e.g., taste and convenience), which increase ratings, from logistics-related complaints, which exert a comparatively stronger negative influence. Grouped regressions suggest greater information reliance in the high-price segment, consistent with an information maturity pattern. Overall, the findings demonstrate that consumer evaluation in online food markets extends beyond price-utility trade-offs toward experience-and information-based value formation. Methodologically, this study advances consumer research by integrating transactional and textural data to model multidimensional satisfaction mechanisms.
