A digital twin (DT) is a virtual model designed to accurately reflect a physical object. We examine the economic benefits of digital aqua twin platform technology, which is applied to aquaculture to optimize production of cultured olive flounder and eel in South Korea. The economic benefits consist of two parts: (1) the benefits from technology development and (2) the benefits from technology adoption. The findings reveal that the benefits from technology development are greater than those from technology adoption. This implies that it is necessary to consider the former, which is often ignored in the previous literature, in quantifying the economic benefits of information technology.

In the evolving global food industry, international certifications have become essential for seafood export companies to ensure product safety, quality, and sustainability, as well as to meet consumer demands and regulatory standards. This study analyzes the decision-making factors influencing the acquisition and maintenance of international certifications among Korean seafood export companies, using decision tree analysis. The research surveyed 134 seafood export companies, focusing on six key factors: corporate characteristics, environmental factors, input factors, organizational structure, company capabilities, and external relationships. The decision tree analysis revealed that among corporate characteristics, the size of sales revenue, number of employees, and proportion of exports were found to play significant roles. For environmental factors, specific demands from overseas buyers, shifting consumer preferences, and compliance with global standards were identified as having a major impact. Regarding input factors, certification costs, validity periods, and investments in processing facilities were revealed to be critical variables. Organizational factors such as managerial support and dedicated personnel, capability factors like inter-departmental collaboration and processing system capacity, and relationship factors including partnerships with certification and export support agencies were also critical in the certification process. This study identified various factors influencing the decision-making process for acquiring and maintaining international certifications among Korean seafood export companies and analyzed the importance of detailed variables for the first time. Additionally, it provides practical and policy-oriented implications to promote the adoption of international certifications as part of efforts to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean seafood. Furthermore, this study contributes to the academic understanding of the decision-making process related to international certifications in seafood export companies.

This study examines the price elasticity of demand for mackerel in the Busan Cooperative Fish Market, the largest wholesale fish market in South Korea. Using a two-stage least squares (2SLS) approach, the analysis addresses endogeneity in pricing by incorporating exogenous environmental variables, such as sea surface temperature (SST) and wind speed. The study estimates demand elasticity for three size categories of mackerel-large, medium, and small-and reveals significant differences across these categories. Large-size mackerel exhibits inelastic demand (-0.875), reflecting its status as a staple product with relatively stable consumer demand. Medium-size mackerel shows highly elastic demand (-2.450), likely due to its role as a substitute for both large and small mackerel. Small-size mackerel also demonstrates high elasticity (-3.444), attributed to its primary use in feed and processing, where demand is particularly sensitive to price changes. Diagnostic tests confirm the validity and relevance of the instrumental variables, with SST and wind speed strongly correlated with price but uncorrelated with consumer demand. These findings highlight the critical role of size-specific market characteristics in shaping price elasticity and provide valuable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders to better manage mackerel supply and ensure pricing stability.

The 2020 revision of Japan's Wholesale Market Act aimed to improve the financial performance of wholesale companies. Before the revision, the wholesale market saw a continuous decline in transaction volume and value, and the operating profit margin of wholesale companies was 0.18% in 2018, with 38.2% of wholesale companies experiencing operating losses. After the revision of the Wholesale Market Act, the operating profit margin of wholesale companies significantly improved to 0.41% by 2022. The reasons for this improvement are as follows: The transaction amount and the rate of change between 2022 and 2018 showed little difference. The number of markets increased by one central wholesale market, and while the number of buying and selling participants decreased, individual purchase volumes increased. The proportion of auctions further declined, and the number of direct transactions rose. As consignment collection decreased, purchased collection increased, leading to an improvement in financial performance. Ultimately, despite the short time frame, the revision of Japan's Wholesale Market Act led to positive changes that improved the financial performance of wholesale companies.

This study analyzes the comparative value chains of domestically caught coastal mackerel and Norwegian mackerel within the Korean market, across six stages: global supply and demand, domestic production and imports from Norway, distribution of raw mackerel, processing into semi-processed or final products, distribution of final products, and consumption. The research methodology combined qualitative and quantitative approaches, including in-depth interviews with 32 industry stakeholders (from fishing companies to government agencies) and an online survey of 400 Seoul consumers, utilizing conjoint analysis. Norway maintains market dominance through a demand-driven value chain, characterized by quality-focused production, efficient overseas processing networks in Southeast Asia and China, and aggressive marketing by the Norwegian Seafood Council. In contrast, Korea's coastal mackerel industry follows a supplier-driven value chain, facing challenges such as inconsistent quality due to year-round non-selective fishing, limited processing capabilities due to high labor costs and aging workforce, and lack of direct consumer marketing channels. The study identifies structural differences in the Korean market's value chain and suggests strategic improvements for the domestic mackerel industry while highlighting the need for a shift toward a more demand-oriented approach.
