Content and Risk Assessment of Artificial Sweeteners in Zero-sugar Beverages Distributed in Gyeongsangnam-do
In this study, the presence of four artificial sweeteners was investigated in zero-sugar beverages marketed in Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, and their potential health risks were evaluated. A total of 150 samples were collected and quantitatively analyzed using UPLC-PDA. All samples contained artificial sweeteners, and only sweeteners listed on the ingredient labels were detected, with levels remaining below the allowable limits. Sucralose had the highest detection rate (99.3%), followed by acesulfame potassium (82.0%), whereas saccharin sodium and aspartame were rarely detected. Aspartame and sucralose tended to be present at higher concentrations. Most beverage categories showed similar overall concentration ranges, except for fruit and vegetable juices. Multiple sweeteners were observed in 81.3% of the samples, with a combination of acesulfame potassium and sucralose being the most common. The estimated daily intake (EDI) values for all sweeteners corresponded to 2.71% of the acceptable daily intake, indicating a low level of health risk. Because the EDI was calculated using total beverage consumption rather than zero-sugar beverages alone, the actual risk was projected to be significantly lower. However, the absence of a maximum permitted level for aspartame in beverages, absence of an official analytical method for sucralose, and frequent combined use of sweeteners underscore the need for further safety evaluation, establishment of analytical methods, and assessment of potential interactions between sweeteners. Considering the expanding zero-sugar beverage market, continued monitoring of artificial sweetener use and safety is required.
