An Analysis of Individual and School Factors Affecting the Career Maturity of High School Students in Gyeonggi Province
This study aims to explore individual and school-level variables influencing the sub-factors of career maturity, including career planning, career self-understanding, and vocational attitudes, among high school students in Gyeonggi Province. For this purpose, multiple regression analyses were conducted using data from 4,698 12th-grade students from the 9th wave of the Gyeonggi Education Panel Study (GEPS). Individual factors included learning self-understanding, voluntary initiative, and mental health, while school factors comprised school adaptation, school satisfaction, and career guidance activities. The main findings are as follows. First, among the individual factors, learning self-understanding and voluntary initiative had significant positive effects on career planning, career self-understanding, and positive vocational attitudes, while exerting negative effects on negative vocational attitudes. In contrast, mental health problems exhibited the opposite pattern. Second, among the school factors, school adaptation and career guidance activities had positive effects on career planning, career self-understanding, and positive vocational attitudes, while reducing negative vocational attitudes. Third, school satisfaction showed differential effects across its sub-dimensions. Satisfaction with the school curriculum had a significant positive effect on career planning, whereas satisfaction with school life contributed to the formation of vocational attitudes. Based on these findings, this study discusses strategies for enhancing high school students' career maturity through the cultivation of individuals' internal assets and multifaceted support at the school level.
