A New Paradigm for Open Storage : The Innovative Model of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen and Its Implications for Korean Open Storage
This study explores the evolving paradigm of open storage in museums, focusing on the innovative model of Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in the Netherlands and its implications for South Korea. While traditional museums display only a small fraction of their collections, the Depot offers full public access to over 154,000 items without curatorial mediation. It achieves a balance between conservation and accessibility through material-based climate zones and a narrative architectural design integrated with curation. In contrast, Korean open storage facilities face structural challenges, including low actual visibility rates, geographical isolation, and an identity crisis between storage and exhibition functions. Furthermore, the lack of legal definitions and the practice of separating architectural and exhibition design hinder their effectiveness. The study suggests that Korea should adopt the Depot's principles by establishing a legal framework for open storage, integrating architecture with curation from the planning stage, and prioritizing operational and financial sustainability before construction.
